I established this fundraiser to honor the memory of my son, Gavin James Buro.
On July 11, 2012, Gavin was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his brain stem. For that first week, while treatment options were being evaluated, he remained in the hospital under intensive care. On one of those days, he received a very unexpected call.
See, for his whole life, Gavin loved to play sports. It started when he was two, shooting hoops with his daddy. Then playing wiffle ball with his uncle. And finally football with his step father. Like most of us - except those of you who will remain nameless - he became a diehard fan of the New York Giants. His hero was Eli Manning. Eli is one of my heros now as well.
When Gavin picked up the phone that day, the last person he expected to call was on the other end of the phone: Eli himself. They spoke for about a half-hour. The next day Gavin received care package from Eli, including a signed football. That wasn't all. When Eli returned from New Orleans, he invited Gavin to the Giants' preseason camp to meet him in person. For Gavin, it was a dream fulfilled.
It was all made possible by the Make A Wish Foundation.
On August 11, 2012, just a few days ago, Gavin lost his battle to cancer. He is survived by his mother, Meghan, his sister, Hazel, his brother, Oscar and me, his father.
Gavin was the sweetest boy. He had a magnetic personality that drew you to him. He never stopped fighting and was entertaining everyone around him until the very end. He just wanted people to be happy. He's left a gaping hole in my heart, one I can't ever hope to fill. But he also inspired me.
As you know, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation's mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.
I started this fundraising effort in honor of Gavin's memory and - like he would - to make dreams come true for other children in his situation.
