MAHTOMEDI AREA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

America's future walks through the doors of our schools every day.
Last year, (July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011) our foundation awarded nearly $250,000 to Mahtomedi students and educators to enhance educational excellence in our community. Generous donations from individuals, foundations and businesses, like you, made the following possible.
Continuing our Tradition of Support for the Arts
$4,700 for ceramic clay recycling equipment used in signature pottery classes at Mahtomedi High School.
$778 to Kathryn Schwister at Wildwood Elementary for African drumming, music and dance tools
$4,125 for summer fine and performing arts experiences for students through the Carole Fargo and Wildwood Artist Series Funds.
$1,300 to sponsor the Fine Arts Banquet that celebrates senior students who have shown exceptional achievement in the arts.
Helping to Nurture and Grow a World Class Engineering Leadership Program
$70,000 grant to help start-up the new Mahtomedi FABLAB at Mahtomedi High School, the first one of its kind IN THE WORLD in a K-12 setting.
$15,000 for program expenses through a 2nd year grant from the Andersen Corporate Foundation.
Enhancing the Science Curriculum
$75,000, through the Mahtomedi Area Green Initiative Fund, was used to purchase and install the Zephyr Wind Turbine on the grounds of Mahtomedi High School. Funds also were used for teacher training and curriculum development on alternative and renewable energy sources in the schools.
$700 for the 6th Grade science magnetism unit and equipment at Mahtomedi Middle School.
Providing Financial Assistance for Post-Secondary Education
This past year, scholarships through our foundation helped to alleviate some of the financial burden of post-secondary studies for 43 students and their parents. Awards totaled $36,450 and went to students planning to attend a variety of schools including the University of Minnesota, St. Thomas, Bethel, Century College, Macalester, University of North Dakota, Drake and St. Olaf.
Supporting Student Health and Wellness
$2,147 to high school counselor, Anne Erickson, for a depression/suicide awareness program.
$4,000 from the Angel Fund for help with basic and emergency needs of students. Examples include school lunches/snacks, tennis shoes and winter clothing.
$1,000 to Kids Hope for an afterschool mentoring program at O.H. Anderson Elementary.
Shaping Minds of Young Learners
$813 in engineering materials for preschoolers and a MN Science Museum Building Basics workshop for preschool and ECFE teachers.
$1,200 to teacher, Jeanna Warren, at Wildwood Elementary for Engineering is Elementary curriculum.
Investing in Innovation and Technology
$7,300 for iPads utilized by teachers and students in music, physics and language arts classes at Mahtomedi High School, in physical education and music classes at Mahtomedi Middle School and in the media center at Wildwood Elementary.
