Thank you for supporting my marathon effort and the programs & services of Wediko Children's Services!

I am training for the 2012 Boston Marathon® as a member of the Wediko Marathon team because:

a) Apparently I am crazy.

b) I have fallen in love with Wediko Children's Services, and will do anything I can to help its programs thrive and grow.

I began my work with Wediko this past summer as a residential counselor on its New Hampire setting. At first, I must say I was overwhelmed: I worked in a cabin of 16-18 year old boys, whose diagnoses encompassed autism, bipolar disorder, ADHD, depression--and the list goes on. This was going to be a challenge, to say the least.

Every day I and the rest of our cabin staff worked with patience, perseverance, and loving kindness: the patience to appreciate that a child takes time to recognize and modify his negative behaviors; the perseverance to continue to work with a struggling child, no matter how trying the circumstances and how slow the progress; the loving kindness to validate a damaged child, to show that he is worth our care and deserves love and happiness.

After six short weeks, I witnessed some of the most unbelievable improvements in our children--one camper, suffering from anger and violence disorders, learned to walk away from a provocation, and take some deep breaths for himself. An autistic camper learned to communicate his often complex emotions via timelines and cartoons. Furthermore, campers from completely different worlds began to make powerful connections with one another: a boy with Asperger's and a boy with depression went on a kayaking trip together, and discussed their fears and insecurities surrounding high school graduation; a boy with a history of drug abuse and boy with an attachment disorder spent late nights sharing their adoption stories.

My time at Wediko last summer has shown me the healing powers of kindness--for when a child feels that he is loved, he feels that he can do anything, and will respond to your good heart with positivity and strength.

Thank you so much for supporting my marathon effort and the programs & services of Wediko Children's Services! You are making a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of children and families across the country.
