I will be in at COP18 in Doha, Qatar from November 24th to December 8th representing the US youth voice in climate politics.
Growing up in Indiana (once called the 2nd least environmentally friendly state), I was never really aware of the impact humans have on the environment. All this changed for me when I moved to New Mexico to go to boarding school. For the first time I was surrounded by people who make the environment a priority. I was able to study Environmental Systems without my teacher telling me that climate change is debatable. I was able to participate in direct actions in response to state policies and learn about the crazy relationship between our government and our planet. I got involved in the school wilderness program and experienced nature that I had no idea existed. Environmental protection, especially how it can be impacted by international policy, has become one of my greatest passions and something I wish to study in college and work towards in the future.
Given my interest in climate issues, I was excited and honored by the opportunity to represent US youth in international climate politics at Conference of the Parties 18 in Doha, Qatar. The world has never before seen an issue as pervasive as climate change. Within my lifetime, the earth will undergo a massive transformation, a transformation that we as a united world are entirely unprepared for. International decisions regarding climate policy are made largely by people that simply won't be alive to see their effects. When I travel to Doha this November with SustainUS, I will be the voice the people who will be.
Next summer, before I go to college, I plan to work full time to pay back the loan I was given for my plane ticket to Doha. However, I still need to raise enough money to cover my costs while in the country. Please consider helping me achieve my goal of raising $800 before I go to Doha. Any amount of money would be greatly appreciated.
