CLIMBING COTOPAXI TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOVE & HOPE CHILDREN'S HOME
MEASURING IN AT 19,347 FEET, COTOPAXI IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S HIGHEST ACTIVE VOLCANOS. NESTLED IN THE ANDES, IT IS HOME TO ONE OF THE WORLD'S FEW EQUITORIAL GLACIERS AND PART OF THE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE. ON NOVEMBER 16TH, 2012 WE WILL CLIMB TO ITS SUMMIT IN AN EFFORT TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE EDUCATION FUND AT LOVE & HOPE CHILDREN'S HOME IN EL SALVADOR.
Cotopaxi represents not only a great challenge, but also holds some numerical significance. The education budget at Love & Hope Children's Home is $19,000. With its summit measuring in at 19,347 feet, Cotopaxi is the perfect match for a fund raiser. We hope to raise $1 for every foot of Cotopaxi's lofty elevation.
I know what you're thinking, "Isn't Cotopaxi in Ecuador? I thought you were raising money for El Salvador. Surely you haven't confused the two!" Don't worry, we've looked at a map, and there's been no confusion. While El Salvador is full of many beautiful landscapes and volcanos, its highest peak, Cerro El Pital, tops out at a mere 8,957 ft. We'd have to climb it twice, and we still wouldn't hit our goal!
We've also chosen Cotopaxi because it represents a new challenge for us: ice. We've been to Camp 1 on Everest, and to the top of Kilimanjaro, but we've yet to strap on crampons and pick our way to the top of something. Rest assured, this won't be easy.
We have a long relationship with Love & Hope. We've supported them for years through work at their home in El Salvador, fundraisers in the States, and sponsoring some of the children. Additionally, Justin lived at Love & Hope for a year during 2010 and 2011 where he helped manage day to day affairs, drove kids everywhere from school to soccer practice, and hosted teams and visitors. He even changed a few diapers. Through all this, we've come to see what an amazing difference Love & Hope can make in a child's life.
Love & Hope provides safety, shelter and family to children who would otherwise live life on the margins. For the past 9 years Love & Hope has been working to break the cycles of violence, poverty and abuse in El Salvador. The children of Love & Hope are bright, funny, and full of potential. We've been lucky enough to spend a lot of time with them over the years, and we want help fund their journey toward a bright and successful future.
In a country that spends less than 3% of its GDP on education, private schooling is practically a necessity in El Salvador. A solid education can make the difference between a life of sustenance and a life of success. Your donation will help provide education for the 26 children at Love & Hope Children's Home who attend a variety of private schools chosen to suit the educational needs and styles of each child.
