Not every dog is born perfect! Our Louie’s Fresh Start program focuses on the dogs who need extra behavior support, whether that means training assistance, socialization assistance or dogs who just need help getting their energy out!
Volunteers have the opportunity to learn which leash walking and handling techniques that are appropriate for different types of dogs. They get to spend quality, one-on-one time with some of our long term dogs! They also get to learn training and behavior assistance techniques that enrich their lives and the lives of the dogs!
Other related areas include our Playgroup Volunteer Team who gets to help socialize the dogs with other dogs, our Behavior & Enrichment Team who work with some of the more energetic dogs, and our Weekend Trail Site at Ladybird Lake Trail.
These dogs were not previously saved from euthanasia because they are harder to handle and retrain which costs more time and money. We believe these dogs deserve a second chance and we need your help to make sure these dogs don’t die needlessly at our city shelter. The number we can save is directly tied to the funds we raise in their honor. Each longer stay dog costs about $250 more than an average easier to place dog.
