We've served over 700 people a month in 2012 - almost half were children - but anticipated funding did not come through. We need your help!
This year the Little Kitchen has witnessed and served an unprecedented level of hungry people - usage of our food shelf has increased over 300% since early 2011. We continued to serve everyone who came to us despite not receiving grants and other funding that was anticipated, because we believe there should be no hungry people - not in Northeast Minneapolis, not anywhere. Period.
Little Kitchen is unique in that it is a "no boundaries, no restrictions" food shelf - which means we put no geographic or income requirements on our service. Our guests can receive food once every 30 days, at a level of 15 pounds of food per adult. We provide substantial, nutritious food: canned and dry goods, produce, dairy, frozen meats, baby food, personal care items, and whatever else we receive in donations. We even provide pet owners with modest portions of dog and cat food as we are able.
The majority of our food is purchased from the Emergency Foodshelf Network, where $1 can buy up to the value of $9 of food. We are also blessed to receive donations of garden produce from community partners and from individuals in the community. We regularly receive nonperishable items generously collected at neighboring churches, community events and donated by individuals.
As a program of Northeast Community Lutheran Church, the Little Kitchen has no paid staff of its own. It is managed by the church's administrator, and distribution shifts are staffed entirely by volunteers. Essentially, 100% OF THE DONATIONS RECEIVED GO DIRECTLY INTO PROVIDING FOOD FOR HUNGRY PEOPLE.
Even with these important, varied resources, we have not been able to keep our income in line with expenses. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Without additional donations, our service will be compromised going forward. We do not want to have to limit the number of guests we serve, nor the frequency with which we are able to serve them.
We believe in the abundance of God's amazing creation. We believe that when people of compassion and love join together, anything is possible. Will you join us?
Thank you in advance for your interest and support!
