U STREET THEATRE FOUNDATION INC DBA LINCOLN THEATRE
A stage for all voices: USTF - Lincoln Theatre presents inspiring multicultural programming in the heart of the vibrant U Street Corridor.
Opened in 1922 as a vaudeville and cinema-house for segregated African-American audiences, the Theatre is a 1,225 seat events and performing arts facility in Washington, DC. The Lincoln's storied stage has hosted legendary greats Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughn; and contemporary stars Quincy Jones, Roberta Flack, Wynton Marsalis, and Maurice Hines, to name a few.
A long-time treasured institution, to the U Street Shaw/Cardozo community, in 2012 the the Jewel on U will celebrate its 90th Anniversary.
A stage for all voices, 100,000 persons passed through the Lincoln's doors during the 2010-11 season. Outreach and special events were conducted to over 20,000 DCPS students and 10,000 active seniors. The Theatre launched signature programming with a pilot play reading series "Backstage at the Lincoln"; introduced a headline concert series "Live at the Lincoln", and expanded its summer youth literacy and performance programming with the "Lincoln Learning Lab". Throughout the season, several special admission-free events such as film screenings and celebrity panel sessions where offered.
Produced in collaboration with the WJCC-Theater J, the play reading series was critically acclaimed and was featured in the New York Times, as well as the Washington Post. Summer Learning Lab events were expanded to include a concert by students from the Washington Jazz Arts Institute.
Program sponsors included the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Smithsonian's National Museum on African-American History and Culture.
