Friends of the Hennepin County Library (formerly Library Foundation) is a vibrant community of supporters for our library system.

  • Almost 70 percent of Hennepin County residents have a library card and have used it within the past three years.
  • Hennepin County Library’s Outreach Services received the 2011 ASCLA Exceptional Service Award
  • More than 210,000 people attended free programs in 2010.
  • Hennepin County Library offers more than 1,695 free public computers.
  • Now in its 15th year, Pen Pals, our ticketed author lecture series, raises critical funds for our organizaiton.
  • There were an estimated 5.8 million in-person visits to our 41 libraries in 2010.
  • 17.5 million items were borrowed in 2010.
  • Hennepin County Library offers approximately 2,900 story times each year.
  • Hennepin County Library offers eBooks for check out through its website hclib.org.
  • The Friends of the Hennepin County Library is honored to sponsor Homework Hub and Guys Read.
  • Childish Films, a free program of children's cinema & arts, offers programs at Central, Ridgedale & Southdale Libraries.
  • Hennepin County Library has more than 5 million items in its collection.
  • In 2011, Talk of the Stacks was awarded th"Best of the Cities" from Minnesota Monthly for the Best Book Club event

Thanks to all the donors who gave on Give to the Max day 2011. Friends of the Hennepin County Library received $48,455 in new donations. In addition, $25,000 of these donations were matched by an anonymous donor – for a total of $73,455 donated.

Friends of the Hennepin County Library (Friends of HCL) is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing our libraries’ rich diversity of resources and programming for generations to come. Your support makes a difference for everyone who uses the Hennepin County Library’s extraordinary services and resources.

The numbers are staggering — last year, 5.8 million visited the Library, checked out more than 17.5 million items and attended more than 210,000 free programs. This wouldn’t be possible without an active community of dedicated supporters, like you. Join our circle of friends today and help us change lives throughout our community.

With your support this year, we will help the Library:

  • Nourish Minds. By providing funding to purchase thousands of books, to support the annual summer reading program and to offer an array of teen programs.
  • Transform Lives. By donating resources for the Homework Hub centers, early literacy services and innovative programs for New Americans.
  • Build Community Together. By coordinating 41 grassroots Friends groups and hosting prominent author and cultural events, such as Pen Pals, Talk of the Stacks and Childish Films series.
