Advocating for the legal rights of disadvantaged people to have safe, healthy and independent lives in strong communities.

People come to Legal Aid with many different problems. What they share is a need to be heard, and a lack of money for sometimes even basic needs. They come with landlord problems, with employment issues and with issues of discrimination. They are looking for access to justice for health care, for equal opportunities to earn a living, to find housing, to get an education and feed their families. The Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis helps thousands of people each year with advice, information, referrals, and when necessary, litigation.

Supporting the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis means helping to:

  • Prevent homelessness
  • Keep children in school
  • Secure resources for basic needs
  • Improve substandard living conditions
  • Provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities at home, at work and at school
  • Protect consumers
  • Aid victims of domestic violence/sexual assault to find safer lives
  • Fight housing discrimination
  • Work with immigrants to help them become contributing members of our society

One Story

Legal Aid represented a person with a disability who was living on slightly more than $1,000 a month in disability benefits. The client underwent kidney transplant surgery and needed immunosuppressant medications to prevent rejection of the new kidney. The drugs cost $1,000 per month, and the client learned that his Medicare part D drug plan refused to cover them forcing the client to spend almost his entire monthly income just on medication. He called Legal Aid for help. A Legal Aid Advocate filed and successfully argued a Medicare appeal for the client. As a result, the Part D plan has begun paying for the immunosuppressant drugs and the client no longer faces an impossible choice between buying these critical medications and having money for even the most basic living expenses.
