Learning In Style
A project of SISTERS OF ST JOSEPH MINISTRIES FUND
When she fled her war-torn country and arrived in Minnesota, Amina couldn’t find a job to support her family because she spoke no English. But rather than falling victim to isolation and poverty, she found out from a friend about English classes taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph. There she not only learned a new language, but found new friends she could trust. Less than two years later, Amina had a job. She had confidence she could make a life here, and she was no longer a stranger in this land of opportunity.
They come from all over the world. Many speak limited or no English. Some cannot read or write even in their own language. Some are victims of torture and violence. But at the CSJ’s Learning In Style program they all find common ground – a safe place to learn the language and survival skills they need in their new home - from some of the finest teachers in the Twin Cities.
For more than 12 years, 300-400 immigrants have benefited annually from the Learning In Style program. Taught by 18 Sisters of St. Joseph and other volunteers with educational M.A. and Ph. D degrees, these students not only gain language and literacy but the ability to function better as parents, workers and members of their communities.
