We inspire, educate, and connect leaders to create a model of sustainable community.

The Institute educates future and current leaders, as well as the local community, on the need to integrate environmental, economic, and social equity issues for a sustainable future; and it serves as a clearing house of information to support leaders in their effort to sustain our quality of life for future generations.

Through participation in the ten-month Leadership for a Sustainable Future, you will

  • Discover and improve your role in building a better community
  • Clarify your vision for a more just and sustainable future
  • Gain a deeper understanding of our region's key sustainability issues and opportunities
  • Get connected to a powerful network of people who want to make a difference!

Here's what graduates say about their experience in the program:

The Leadersihp Institute program is a unique and exceptional way to learn the tenants of responsible business and how to effect change through public policy. This program will forever affect your vision of how you can contribute to society – no matter what you do.

Alison Healy, Executive Director Solar Sonoma County

Through the Leadership Institute I was able to see how the important issues of our time such as energy, water, health, agriculture, land use, transportation, and the economy are woven together in Sonoma County. And it was awesome to meet the local leaders creating community solutions for a more healthy, just, and ecologically vibrant world.

Sam Ruark, County of Sonoma Energy & Sustainability Coordinator

My experience with the Leadership Institute was wonderful. I learned more about how Sonoma makes policy and how people can become involved in changing policy or affecting policy change. The speakers and professionals on the panel discussions were well informed and dedicated experts in their fields. The learning atmosphere in each class was exciting and well structured. I learned what a special place Sonoma County is and I want to keep contributing to the vibrancy of the community.

Brian Martens, Korbel Champagne

The program was simply amazing. Moving from New York City a few days before the class began, I had no previous knowledge of sustainability issues. Through fascinating lectures, panel discussions, site tours, and networking with classmates, over the course of the year I developed a strong foundation that I will utilize for the rest of my life.

Jennifer Johnson, Foreign Service Officer, U.S. Department of State

Being very experienced in public policy squabbles in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but relatively new to Sonoma County, I found that the program offered precisely what I was hoping for - a well balanced introduction to many of the organizations, individuals, and issues in Sonoma County that matter. The program is designed in such a way that both veterans and newcomers to public policy will not be bored or mystified, respectively. Woody Hastings, Renewable Energy Implementation Manager Climate Protection Campaign

This (program) is for any individual that feels a passion for creating a better place in this world. You are provided with tools to help you focus and hone your enthusiasm and then asked to use that focus to effect change. There is nothing more valuable than being given the tools and encouragement to follow your dreams.
