Help get Nicaraguan kids into school and keep them there to break the cycle of poverty before it is transferred to another generation.
In January, I'll be riding my mountain bike around Lake Nicaragua. 375 miles in 8 days! Not only will it be a great adventure, physically and culturally, but it's also a fundraiser for Empowerment International, a nonprofit that helps get kids into school and keep them there in a country where 50% of children who start first grade don't make it past fifth. You can learn more about EI here: http://empowermentinternational.org/about/
If you're looking for a good cause to donate to over the holiday season, please consider making a donation to EI that's affiliated with my ride. The money will be used to help pay for Nicaraguan kids to attend school---school supplies, tutoring, home visits, etc. There is more specific info on EI's website about the organization's approach to providing financial and moral support for children and families, as well as its track record of success.
The minimum cost for participating in the ride is $1,500; $500 of that covers a rider's personal expenses during the ride and $1,000 goes directly to the program. I am contributing $1,500 myself but would like to raise more if possible. Even just a $10 donation will make a difference considering that many of these families live on less than $2 per day (that's about half of what I pay for a post-ride beer).
Thanks for considering this. There are so many worthwile reasons to support education. And I look forward to sharing some good stories about the ride!
