Help our students fund their way to the capital! Every donation brings our hard-working students one step closer to Washington, DC.
UrbanFUTURE's primary goal is to close the achievement gap in St. Louis. In order to do this, we strive to restore the connection between families, the school, and the community. In a city where the graduation rate has dropped below 50%, we find ourselves up against an enormous challenge. And yet we are constantly encouraged by the incredible tenacity of our UrbanFUTURE students at L'Ouverture Middle Academy, who are working hard both during and after the school day to improve their grades and become successful young adults.
Last year, seven dedicated students from L’Ouverture earned their way to Washington D.C. by participating in a rigorous research course and fundraiser. The word spread, and this year many more students are eager to take on the challenge and make their way to the capital. For most of our students, this will be their first time outside of the state.
In order to participate, each student is required to select a monument or landmark of interest in Washington D.C. and spend the semester researching its history and significance. Last year our students were thrilled to visit the places they had learned so much about. From walking the halls of the Library of Congress to watching the historic changing of the guard at Arlington Cemetery, our students covered more ground in the three days than most had walked all year. Students met with both Missouri Senators Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt. They asked the senators challenging questions about their own experience, including what Senator McCaskill planned to do to improve the educational system in Missouri.
By the end of the three days all were exhausted, but nobody was ready to go home. It was clear that Washington D.C. had left its mark on every student. Even as we boarded the bus to return to St. Louis, the students were already discussing what they looked forward to seeing when they took the trip again next year.
