Public park community-based restoration on Capitol Hill SE in memory of a late landscaper with deep love of community and creative landscape
Kim Brenegar, a Capitol Hill resident and owner of the DC landscaping business, “The Ornamental Garden”, died in a car accident in 2009 at the age of 49. "Friends of Kim Brenegar" formed in 2010 to create a living legacy in honor of Kim’s love of community and the environment. The founding group chose the renovation of a small public park at the corner of 8th Street, Independence, and North Carolina Avenues in southeast Washington DC, just steps from Kim’s home.
This is indeed a Love Project for Kim, the landscape, and the many Capitol Hill people she nurtured. Four hundred people attended her memorial service held at the North Hall of Eastern Market.
In years past, Kim volunteered much time and talent to maintain the garden when it most needed care. Since her passing, however, it has fallen into neglect again. "Friends of Kim Brenegar" is a growing group of people who will restore the park to one of true beauty using native plants.
