Your generous donations will help finance the costs of travel to Ghana, where I will distribute microloans to recipients living in Atorkor.
The problem of poverty has been puzzling Governments, NGOs, and private sector companies for decades. While many projects have perceived poverty as strictly an economic problem, I believe that poverty also stems from underlying social structures of which many of us are not aware. By engaging the economic problems of poverty-stricken areas through microcredit, we are able to approach the social problems through a comprehensive manner that stresses the importance of education, networking, and sustainability. This approach allows poverty-stricken people access to not only the innovation of credit, but also empowers people to improve many aspects of their lives, such as their education, health, and economic sustainability.
The funds that you are donating are to help me finance the costs of conducting fieldwork as an intern for Lumana in Atorkor for the duration of one to two months over summer break. During my stay, I will work with Lumana to disburse loans and extend the power of credit to the population of Atorkor. The cost of transportation, vaccinations, visas, and living expenses will be $3500. I am hoping to raise $2500 by June 15, and will contribute $1000 as my personal contribution to this endeavor.
Thank you for taking your time to read about my beliefs and goals in the area of microfinance. I hope that I have convinced you of why I believe microfinance is an effective way to help empower the poor. I urge you to help support the cause by donating. While my main goal for this summer is to conduct fieldwork in Ghana, I am dedicated to spreading the word about the potential of microfinance. Whether or not you donate, I welcome you to visit my personal blog (xiaohanzhang.wordpress.com) and Lumana's webpage (www.lumana.org) as a means of keeping up to date on the field of microfinance, and to invite your friends and family to visit this site. Once again, thank you for your support. This cause is something that I truly believe in, and I could not do this without your support.
Lumana is currently under fiscal sponsorship of Global Brigades until we complete our own 501(c)3
