Joseph’s House is a hospice home providing healing care for homeless men and women who are dying of AIDS and cancer.

Joseph's House was formed in 1990 in response to the AIDS crisis in Washington, DC, which has now deepened into an HIV/AIDS epidemic, the worst in the country. We welcome about 40 people per year into this community, and seek to practice mercy, justice, unconditional love--and forgiveness (mostly toward ourselves, when we forget). With care of this kind, the residents can be in less distress and better able to cope with dying and loss within themselves and in their relationships with family and friends. Nearly everyone who comes here heals in some way--emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes even physically.

Joseph's House came into My Life in June 2011, learning the loss of My only sibling, My Dear Brother Paul Aguirre Jr. I cannot tell you how much the Joseph House, Staff & Volunteer's means to Me! From coming into My Life in a Blink of an eye to learning of the most beautiful & celebrated death anyone can ever have! We as His Family (My Brother Paul) couldn't have celebrated any more meaningful!!! As Beliver's in Jesus Christ, I always thought that My gifts back to God would be about My Life trials & experience's - it's not - It WILL BE to continue to reach out to the needs of other's - sharing & carrying out My Brother's Light & Torch in any way I possibly can. If you are reading this & you are not in touch with Family members please, please call them & tell them where you are it doesn't matter what has gone on or wrong in your Life - YOU ARE LOVED! Let's reach out so we can help those in need! My Dear Little Brother, I Love You, Your Family Loves You & You will ALWAYS BE MISSED DEARLY From this Earth! Until We Meet Again! Always Your Sister, Brenda Bishop & Love From Our Families!!

It means so much to me that at Joseph's House, meaningful support is given to all caregivers - staff and volunteers - so that they may be nourished, not depleted, by their good work.

Yes, there is sadness at Joseph's House, but there is laughter and fun, too. Joseph's House is a place where real love lives and is put into practice at every moment. Transformation from fear and uncertainty into confidence of loving care is typically seen in new residents. Not unusual is a person very ill coming to Joseph's House and becoming well enough to leave for residence in their own place-even getting a job. Funds donated to Joseph's House are well spent and very well stewarded.tewarded a careice

Joseph's House is a house full of people with compassion and loving kindness who spend their lives caring for those who are often forgotten in our hurried society. Thank you Joseph's House for being in our community.

Nowhere have I learned more about healing -- for living, in dying -- than at Joseph's House. And nowhere are their better teachers than Joseph's House residents and volunteers and staff. Blessings!

Jean Gendron says, "I think Joseph's House is a unique, caring, healing place in Washington, DC. The ministry there canot be measured in only human terms. Regular staff and all the volunteer are amazing. I think Patty Wudel's letters are so revealing about the life and miracles there."

Pat and Grif Bates write that "the foundation of all spiritual discipline is kindness. Joseph's House is a fountain of kindness. We contribute regularly to help spread this kindness which it seems the world needs dearly."

Joseph's House is a home in the truest sense: a place where many have found sanctuary from city streets and confounding health care systems; comfort in shared meals, clean linens, common space, and a safe place to sleep; acceptance of biography, history, illness, beliefs, unbelief, failures and successes; celebration of arrivals, returns, and a peaceful final departure; affirmation of worth as a beloved creation of God. What a privilege it has been to bear witness, for 21 years, to the creation and sustenance of this community of hope for so many living with HIV infection and AIDS in Washington, D.C. I give thanks in all my remembrances of you.
