Joseph Smith fundraising for JASY - JAMAICAN ADVANTAGE THROUGH SPORTS FOR YOUTH
Every child has a dream and a right to be all that he or she can be. This coming summer, I will be part of a Mission team that is committed to help make dreams come true. Our group will run a week-long sports camp, called JASY, for 100 destitute but deserving children who live in shanties located in the Riverton dump in Kingston, Jamaica.
Everyone in Jamaica is extremely proud of the success of the Jamaican Track and Field team in the Olympics. While not everyone can be an Olympic athlete, every child in Riverton hopes for an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new friends, and be recognized for his or her own special talents. These are the opportunities that JASY Camp provides.
JASY utilizes sports training as a vehicle to improve self-esteem, physical well-being, teamwork, Christian values and cross-cultural learning. I look forward to serving these children of God and to sharing with them God’s love, joy and promise of a better future.
Our team is working hard to raise funds to offset some of our travel and accommodations costs, and to help cover the cost of the camp itself (facilities, transportation, meals, emergency medical and security services, sports equipment, crafts, and character recognition awards for the campers.)
“The children who have attended the JASY camps truly appreciate the experience as the activities have had an uplifting effect on their lives physically, emotionally and spiritually. Some of the youth have begun to see life from a different perspective, not just poverty; and besides putting a smile on their faces it has given them a chance to use their God-given talents.
One of the major problems in Jamaica is that there is a lack of hope that anything will get better and JASY offers these young people a spirit of hope and love. The friendships that have been formed, the bonds that have been cemented will be life-long for the people in Riverton. God Bless JASY!”
