Working toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed

Every child deserves the chance to succeed, yet studies show that children from low-income neighborhoods are at a greater risk of school failure. Jumpstart is a national early education organization that helps these children develop the language and literacy skills they need to be successful in school, setting them on a path to close the achievement gap before it is too late.

Here in Washington, DC, Jumpstart partners 284 area college students with almost 800 Washington D.C. preschool children living in low-income neighborhoods. Together, for the entire 2011-2012 school year, they will work on the language and literacy skills these children need to succeed not only in school, but also in life.

I have been working with Jumpstart DC for almost two years--serving on their Local Advisory Board, and this is a fantastic group of dedicated people working to close the literacy gap in the District of Columbia.
