Help me send thousands of students to college. Each dollar donated provides access to $62 in financial aid for students.
Welcome to my 2013 Boston Marathon fundraising page for Team uAspire. I am excited to return to my place of birth in April. Mile 19 will take us directly past my first home (http://goo.gl/maps/yNPdX), and Mile 25 will bring us within a Ted Williams long ball away from the hospital (http://goo.gl/maps/LvOGE) that hosted my first hours of life. What a tour!
And I’m very excited to be supporting a terrific organization as part of my training and running. uAspire works to ensure that all young people can find an affordable path to - and through - a postsecondary education. Post-secondary completion in the US is increasingly important, yet rampantly uncommon, especially among low-income and minority communities.
Financial access is one of the primary reasons students either don’t move on to a post-secondary program or fail to complete programs they start. But the world is leaving our students behind. By 2018, 63 percent of all American job openings will require some sort of postsecondary education. While the U.S. once led the world in post-secondary completion, this generation of Americans is tied for 10th. In 2007, only 51% of students who started college earned a degree. (Source: Gates Foundation.) In low income and minority communities, completion rates are even lower.
uAspire has helped students secure more than $150 million in financial aid in the last three years alone and has awarded more than $5 million in need-based last dollar scholarships since its founding, maintaining a 75% college graduation rate for the students they serve. Through partnerships with high schools, community organizations and local universities, uAspire has helped more than 50,000 students achieve their dream of higher education.
