1 Month. 3 Plays & 1 Musical. The Newest in Jewish Theater.
We are proud to present, for industry and public consideration, the 4th Annual OPEN Festival, a sample of what we believe Jewish theater should look like: exciting and heartfelt, progressive and connected, cutting-edge and haimish all at the same time.
This year’s festival will be our deepest yet – three great plays and one AMAZING musical receiving in-depth development and advocacy that will lead directly to production.
This year will also feature Jewish Dramaturgy, an opportunity for leaders in the Jewish community to directly participate in the artistic process, deepening the Jewish ideas and hearts of the plays we are creating.
ALL DONORS OVER $100 WILL BE INVITED TO BE A JEWISH DRAMATURG.
Donors over $18 receive tickets to one performance, and donors over $36 receive a Festival Pass entitling them to see all 4 shows. There are just 45 seats for each performance, so get yours now.
And after each performance, join the writer, director and cast at a nearby watering hole to discuss the play, the ideas, and the future of this great art form.
All readings take place at the Theater at the 14th Street Y, 344 East 14th Street.
To put bold, progressive Jewish conversations on world stages.
To deeply discuss the place of ethnic, religious and cultural identification in the 21st Century.
To attract the finest artists to engage with Jewish ideas and culture.
To entertain and illuminate the public about 21st Century Jewish life.
Engage 50 writers, actors, directors, dramaturges, designers and technicians.
Provide 116 hours of developmental time to 4 project creators.
Present 4 new pieces for 450 audience members.
Advocate for featured plays with 15 theaters in NYC and regionally.
The JPP seeks plays that find the intersection between Jewish identity and global self. We want to look at the places where Jewish ideas, traditions, stories, myths, culture (and yes, religion) impact, inform, and hopefully improve our lives. While we value history, we will always lean toward plays that tackle vibrant strands of today’s world: social justice, economic justice, diversity, strong women in Jewish life, LGBTQ inclusion, new perspectives on Israel, environmentalism, and interfaith relations.
