I am training to run the Disney Marathon in Jan. 2012 in honor of my nephew, Caleb Whan, who passed away 11 days after his 4th birthday after a difficult battle with Leukemia. I watched, horrified, as this killer aggressively took the life from this brave little fighter. Seven months from diagnosis to death. Less than the time it took to carry this child in her womb, my sister lost her firstborn son. We all see these disturbing images of ill children on television and change the channel as quickly as possible. You never think it could happen to your own family, someone you adore. My sister and her husband created this foundation, Caleb’s Crusade, in his memory to aid local families with the astronomical fees associated with a child in treatment. Insurance covers only a portion in many cases…there are copays, medication fees, travel expenses, etc. incurred that insurance does not cover. Many of these parents have to quit their jobs to care for their children. They are also committed to donating monies specifically to childhood cancer research as a mere 5% of all government cancer funding goes to Childhood Cancer, although it is the leading cause of natural death among our children. Caleb’s ability to laugh, play, sing and remain a fun-loving child has inspired me to help make a difference in the lives of other children and families suffering these very tragedies every day. I ask that you do the same. With a small donation, you can help make a real difference in the lives of children living and dying with all forms of Childhood Cancer. . I am fully aware of the state of our economy and the financial difficulties we are all having personally and professionally however, we must remember Cancer does not abate for a flailing economy.
