For Jayden Renee:
From the moment you began, we dreamt of you. We wondered what you would be and what you would do in this world. As each day passed, our love for you grew as you grew. We imagined the shape of your nose, the color
of your eyes, the softness of your skin. We were full of love for you. As each day passed, we began to know you.
We learned that you love chocolate like your mom and we couldn’t wait to find out how you would take after your dad.
When we held you for the first time, we knew that it would also be the last time that we held you in our arms. We were so lucky to meet you and to know you and we are so proud to be your parents. We wish that everyone had the chance to meet you and to know you as we did. We no
longer have to wonder what you will be and what you will do in this world. We know who you are. You are a beautiful angel, you are our daughter and we will hold you inside of our hearts forever.
Written for Jayden's funeral October, 2003.
As you know, I am a founding partner of Healthy Birth Day along with 4 other fabulous women, Janet Petersen, Tiffan Yamen, Kerry Biondi-Morlan and Kate Safris. We are dedicated to the prevention of stillbirth and infant death through education, advocacy and support. One of our projects is Count the Kicks. We aim to provide free educational materials to health care providers and teach expecting parents to monitor their baby’s movements in the last trimester of pregnancy. We have had requests for our materials from not only across the nation but from several other countries as well. But greatest of all, are the success stories. Hearing that counting kicks saved a baby and knowing that another family isn’t grieving is beyond rewarding.
In 2009 we founded Healthy Birth Day – a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing stillbirths and infant deaths through education, advocacy and parent support. Since founding Health Birth Day we are proud to have gotten Iowa’s Stillbirth Registry law enacted, which has brought more than $2 million into Iowa for stillbirth prevention research, founded a parent-to-parent network to reach out to grieving families immediately following their loss of their babies, and to have launched the “Count the Kicks” public health campaign to help prevent stillbirths.
Our largest initiative, the Count the Kicks campaign teaches expecting parents the importance of monitoring fetal movement during the third trimester of pregnancy. Recent research has shown that this practice may reduce the stillbirth rate (1 in every 150 pregnancies in the US) by one-third.
Your donations will go directly to support the Count the Kicks campaign, helping Healthy Birth Day supply medical providers with these life-saving materials at no charge to share with expecting patients. Currently, our Count the Kicks materials are being used by over 70% of Iowa birthing hospitals and OB/GYN clinics as well as by nearly 2000 healthcare providers in the state of Michigan. Requests for the materials have come in from all over the country and the world, and our ongoing challenge is to meet that demand.
Thank you for all of you love and support!
