Hello and thank you for visiting my fundraising page!
This summer I will be traveling to Nicaragua with Continental Crossings in hopes of building a pedestrian footbridge for the community of Jucuapa Occidental, Nicaragua. The community is located in the Matagalpa municipality, about 10km south of Matagalpa City. Continental Crossings consists of seven University of Iowa students, including six engineers and one business major. We will be partnering with the NGO Bridges to Prosperity as well as the Peace Corps to design and implement this bridge.
There is a river that runs through the town, and during the rainy season, the community experiences complete isolation because of flooding, where rivers are too high and dangerous to pass. This means that for months at a time, about 200 people are left stranded without access to other communities, food, supplies, healthcare, education and economic opportunities. Bridges to Prosperity has much experience with implementing similar bridge projects in the past around the world and has seen their success.
The bridge will be a suspended design spanning about half the length of a football field. The construction of the bridge will be completed using local materials and voluntary local labor. These projects provide training opportunities where community members can learn skills including basic masonry, carpentry and groundwork techniques. The average bridge can be completed in less than ten weeks at a low cost, making these community-built bridges sustainable and cost effective.
