JSB's 20th Anniversary Season ~ Another Milestone!
When JSB first started out, an “expert” told us that if we could survive the first seven years we’d have a chance at surviving a lifetime. Well, I’m not exactly sure of the metaphysical twist in that, but we got over that hurdle and now we are leaping into our 20th Anniversary Season. While survival does not always bring wisdom, it does provide a place to pause and look back as well as ahead — and I’m both humbled and grateful as we launch this season. We’ve been busy with behind the scenes preparations for this celebration and I’m feeling inspired and exhilarated about the year ahead.
We Are Growing. Following a whirlwind coast-to-coast audition tour this past spring, I’m absolutely delighted to have three beautiful new dancers that joined the company in September. We are also fortunate to have the exceptionally talented Fritz Masten joining us from New York as our costume designer and scenic collaborator in residence.
We Are Collaborating. At the encouragement of our partners at the Schubert Club I went to a performance at the Poison Rouge club in NYC, where I met an incredible violinist: Todd Reynolds from BILLBAND. I collaborated with Todd on a new piece that he performed LIVE at the FALL SEASON. A retrospective of JSB’s work and an exquisite male duet by Lar Lubovitch to celebrate equal marriage rights for all Minnesotans rounded out the Fall program. WINTER in our TEK BOX will bring a diverse and exciting lineup of choreographers including new work from the exciting Norbert De La Cruz III from NYC, contact improvisation master Blake Nellis, and company member Nicky Coelho. Additionally, a special choreographic initiative will celebrate co-founder Sally Rousse’s 20 years as a creative force in Minnesota.
We Are Going to Hell. In the SPRING we’ll be producing Inferno, a full length ballet inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. This is a project I’ve been dreaming of my entire career. We’ve assembled a fantastic design team to create an immersive projected stage environment and a dynamic and eclectic musical score. I hope you’ll join us as we take contemporary ballet on a journey to the underworld — and back.
This is a big year for us and the most important part of the equation is YOU, the audience and supporters who make our work possible. Thank you!
