Help fund a newly-renovated program center in the heart of one of the poorest immigrant neighborhoods in Minneapolis.

I’M IN!

This is the place where a lot of people giving a little, makes a huge difference.

THE NEED:
Help fund a newly-renovated program center in the heart of one of the poorest immigrant neighborhoods in Minneapolis.

WHY THIS PROJECT?
If this center did not exist in this location, poverty and violence could spread throughout this part of Minneapolis. Check weekly police reports just north of the program center. For specifics, Google: Shots Fired Maps- City of Minneapolis.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The center is owned by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul Province, an Order of Nuns committed to social justice. These Nuns have a celebrated history of transforming poor areas through their commitment to people of all races, religions, and walks of life.

The center has an ELL school-- Learning In Style, where adult immigrants from over 75 countries, learn English, math, computers, and citizenship. Also provided is a children’s room where students’ pre-school children are cared for free-of-charge while their parent attends class. Another part of the Center is filled with seasonal clothes and household items.

The Sisters are experienced teachers who know that education is the most transformative gift one can give. Test scores show that students at Learning In Style perform 20% higher on the national standardized tests then students at other ELL schools. The quality education enables immigrants to find employment, care for their families and give back to their new nation as an active, contributing citizen.

FACTS
The United States government selected Minnesota to be one of the United States’ largest resettlement areas for new immigrants. In addition, Minnesota has the only other US Center for Victims of Torture outside of Washington DC. Healing this trauma is intense. Many of these individuals attend Learning In Style because they feel safe with the Nuns. The environment is warm, welcoming and beautiful in its simplicity. All people, all faiths are welcomed.

Between 1982 and 2008 One million immigrants representing 182 nations passed through Minnesota; tens of thousands each year call Minnesota home.

The Sisters of St. Joseph put a stake in the ground in the midst of the immigrant neighborhood. They are professional teachers who contribute their services to provide a quality education to our nation’s newest neighbors.
