iMentor program activities

Where do I begin. Kevin a 15 year old teenager who has inspired me in my own endeavors. Kevin, is an ambitious, energetic, and enthusiastic person who currently is learning Japanese which is part of his high school curriculum. Before meeting my mentee, like every other mentor, i was nervous. Before meeting him we had engaged in lite conversations through email. We were just breaking the ice for the most part until I started feeling a sense of comfort with his responses. From his first couple of emails, he was open, and not afraid of exploring the limits of casual conversation. I began to realize how much we have in common. Our basic interests and future goals run distinctly parallel to each other, grossly due to the excellent matching process imentor has implemented. But the one thing the matching process cannot determine is the chemistry two people can have. It can only assume given the similarites the two may have, even then the chemistry my not be so good. Meeting Kevin at the first iMentor event was exciting, and I had a good time. It felt like i was meeting a close friend even though we were matched for a few weeks prior to meeting. We were open in our email's which made meeting in person so easy because we had alot to talk about. Personally i've had good and bad experiences throughout my life, and i do not wish to bombard Kevin with it but simply be there to listen and give advice when given the opportunity. Making the decision to be a mentor was the second best decision i made first was choosing to go to college. Learning how to humble yourself and listen to the voice of those younger than you has showed me how bright the future is for them given their probable living circumstances and environment. Get involved, you will not regret it.
