Dear friends and family,

As many of you know, I work and volunteer for an amazing organization called iMentor. I'm sure most of you have had someone in your life you consider a role model or a mentor. I think NYC public school youth deserve the same-- and I know you do, too!

This year, in addition to working as a Program Manager, I'm mentoring a young woman named Crystal, who is a 9th grader at a high school in the South Bronx. I have loved the opportunity to learn more about Crystal through her emails and our visits. Recently, she ice-skated for the first time with me at an iMentor event! We held hands as we clumsily navigated the ice together, and giggled as we came close to losing our balance more than a few times. In the next three and a half years of our match, I hope to help Crystal negotiate the difficulties of high school, see her graduate, and stay in touch with her as she enrolls in college. iMentor makes it possible for me to empower Crystal in this way.

iMentor connects New York City professionals with high school students from low-income communities, creating the foundation and support for high-impact mentoring relationships. The success of iMentor is demonstrated by the fact that 92% of eligible mentees graduated from high school after the 2009 program year (compared to New York City’s average graduation rate of 60.7%), and 82% enrolled in college. This year alone, iMentor will match 1,200 young people with 1,200 mentors in New York City – connecting professionals seeking a meaningful volunteer commitment with the young people who benefit so significantly from mentoring relationships.
