Mentoring Works. Help me reach my goal so that many more underserved youth can be connected to caring mentors.

Dear Friends & Family:

As some of you may know, I volunteer for an organization called iMentor. While most of us are privileged to have had a person in our life we would consider a role model, a mentor, or simply someone to go to for advice and guidance, iMentor matches youth in low-income communities with professional mentors, most of whom otherwise might never have the same meaningful relationships.

To give you a little background on my experience so far, I was paired with Mifetao in October 2009. Mifetao is from Togo, Africa and moved to Queens with his Father and Aunt when he was a Sophomore in High School. While English is not his first language, I have witnessed a steady improvement in his verbal and communication skills through our weekly correspondence. Together, we have worked on resume building, interview prepping and etiquette, goal setting and other skills mostly geared towards preparing for College. Mifetao enjoys creating animations and playing soccer and hopes to attend college at Kingsboro, like his older brother. While he is shy and reserved, Mifetao has become more confident and outgoing through our interactions and I have enjoyed getting to know him this past semester. I look forward to being his mentor through the remainder of his high school experience.

iMentor connects New York City professionals with high school students from low-income communities, creating the foundation and support for high-impact mentoring relationships. The success of iMentor is demonstrated by the fact that 92% of eligible mentees graduated from high school after the 2009 program year (compared to New York City’s average graduation rate of 60.7%), and 82% enrolled in college. This year alone, iMentor will match 1,200 young people with 1,200 mentors in New York City – connecting professionals seeking a meaningful volunteer commitment with the young people who benefit so significantly from mentoring relationships. In order to do this we need your help.

Please consider making a donation to help me reach my goal. To learn more about iMentor, please feel free to reach out to myself or visit their website at www.imentor.org.

Thank you for your support.
