Dear friends and family,

As many of you know I work for iMentor, a non-profit with an extremely innovative mentoring approach. I can honestly say that I feel blessed with the opportunity to work for this organization and feel truly inspired to come to work each day. I have a case load of about 100 mentor/mentee pairs and can honestly say each pair has a unique relationship. We provide mentors to high school youth in under-served communities through a school-based approach. The schools we work with must meet two of three requirements: 1. over 90% of the students have been in the U.S. for 4 yrs or less, 2. at least 70% of the students are Black or Latino and 3. at least 70% of students are below the poverty line (4 person family living at $35,000 combined family income) .The stories I encounter about the impact mentors and mentees are making on each other is phenomenal.
I have seen NYC public high school students become extremely motivated by professional adults, whom they truly look up to. I have seen mentors make time in their schedules to visit their mentees' school and become acquainted with their environment and in some cases their families as well. I have seen students open up to mentors about extremely personal issues (death, pregnancy, disabilities etc...). I have seen mentors rally together to support Haitian students who suffered personal loses in the recent earthquake by coming to school fundraisers to show their support. From personal loses to birthday celebrations, from school plays to devastating situations, I've seen mentors play a huge supportive role in the lives of our youth and I've seen these youth in turn benefit and grow in the matter of a few months. Please help me reach my goal in order to help iMentor extend its services beyond the 1,200 youth we already serve.
