You can help me raise money and awareness for the Somaly Mam Foundation whose aim it is to end human trafficking.

I hate running--every step until the last. It takes every ounce of willpower I posess to get myself out there. I signed up for a half marathon. Why? I wanted a challenge. I wanted to stop taking my ability to run whenever I wanted for granted. I wanted all of the health benefits running can bring.

Then I realized I could run this race for someone other than myself. I could run down the street, drawing attention with my tomato red face and winded appearance, to a cause. A cause I feel very passionate about. Ending human trafficking.

You can help me support the Somaly Mam Foundation whose mission is:

"To give victims and survivors a voice in their lives, liberate victims, end slavery, and empower survivors as they create and sustain lives of dignity."

There are so many honorable causes out there that you are asked to donate to every day. I don't want you to feel like you have to give me your life savings but if you could give something, it would not only mean something to me personally but to an organization who helps people around the world.

As an alternative, you could choose not to think of your donation as supporting this cause. You could think about how your donation is the carrot on the stick that is making me hobble 13 miles down the street in Providence, in August in front of gawking strangers. Maybe that's more your thing.

Either way, if I survive this race and donate $500.00 to boot, I will thank you and every lost soul whose life is changed by the Somaly Mam Foundation will thank you.

***P.S. If you believe the Somaly Mam foundation is a cause you want to support in your own way, you can join the PROJECT FUTURES program.

"PROJECT FUTURES global, a program of the Somaly Mam Foundation, empowers a passionate network of socially-engaged volunteers, activists, and young professionals to raise awareness and funding to combat human trafficking and sex slavery worldwide. "

Have fun. I'll never forget the best thing someone told me about my marathon. "The race is your victory lap because you've already put in the work."
