Visiting colleges is "motivation of the highest reality," and it's social justice. Support our youth and our college access initiatives!
"Every step I took inside the boundaries of a university was a step further in my motivation to reach a university. Walking around the universities really does make a dream to attend a university more like a reality. It is definitely motivation of the highest value, motivation that is a necessity for students in our communities.” German Octaviano, Humanitas Alumnus - Class of 2011, Current UC San Diego Sophomore
Our journey began over six years ago with setting up a university discovery tour. UC Berkeley, Stanford, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo- who wouldn’t be excited about the prospect of their son/daughter seeing firsthand what life is like at the top universities in the country? But, the endeavor quickly caused great doubt and apprehension. Tour cost: $400 per student! $18,000 worth of carne asada plates, walkathons, candy drives, and car washes later, 48 freshmen were on the three day discovery tour of their lives. Since those first years, we have simultaneously cut costs in half, doubled the number of students participating, included alumni panels, added a fourth university to the tour, and fundraised to take our students on both Southern and Northern California trips.
As the new Social Justice Humanitas Academy, our mission is to get students to and through college. We are shifting the paradigm. The new norm: COLLEGE GRADUATION!
Your generous donation can make that possible!
Now that we have opened and graduated our first class, we know we are making a difference. Last year, over 80% of our seniors were eligible for four year universities. By graduation day, 97% of the class had already enrolled in a two or four year institution or the military. These seniors were the first to go on our college discovery tours, and this data proves that college trips have a tremendous impact.
We need your financial support! This year, we are taking our students on two overnight college trips to San Diego and Northern California, in addition to many day trips. For all that we speak of college, it is not until our students take their first steps onto a campus that they understand that college is a possibility for them. We need your help in giving our youth the opportunity to take those first steps, and in return, they’ll be taking their great steps towards advancing our community. Many of our students know more people in prison then they do in college. For many, college is an abstraction, and this trip, in conjunction with our curriculum, makes college a reality.
We know there are a lot of programs to support, all trying to help our students continue on to college and careers. We, the Social Justice Humanitas Academy, promise that your investment will make a real, enduring impact on our students, creating a positive ripple effect of growth in our community.
