I am raising money to give back to the C.O.P.S. organization that has assisted my family through this terrible tragedy.
My husband, Capt. Chad A. Reed, Sr. was killed in the line of duty on January 14, 2010 while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect fleeing from south Florida that had shot 4 women, killing 2 of them. The murder suspect pulled into a local gas station where several citizens were fueling up. Chad and other deputies attempted to surround his vehicle and the suspect shot one fatal shot before being shot himself. Chad was transported to Shands at the University of Florida where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was also transported to the hospital and was released several weeks later to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office where he was charged with 2 counts of murder and 2 counts of attempted murder along with the 1 count of murder in the first degree for killing my husband.
The suspect plead guilty to murdering Chad in February of 2011 and was sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole. He still faces the charges in Hernando County.
Life for us changed on that day in January of 2010 and will forever be changed because Chad was taken so unnecessarily from us. Chad and I have two boys, "CJ" Chad Jr. age 10 and Caden age 6. We currently take one day at a time and continue to adapt to a "new normal". The boys are active in sports and after Chad's death I reduced my work hours from full to part-time in order to have more time to spend with the boys.
I have attended the spouses retreat and the national candlelight vigil and memorial services held in Washington D.C. and have already made plans for the boys and I to attend Kids Camp this year. My goal is to continue to raise our two boys as Chad and I set out to do, but without him....only his memory and the legacy he has left with us.
C.O.P.S. members were present during the first days after Chad's death and they continue to make their presence known and have made it clear they will always be here to help us through as we rebuild our lives. My goal in participating in this walk and fundraiser is to help give back to the organization that has helped me learn to cope and deal with the loss of my husband and best friend and CJ & Caden's daddy.
