HOME Line Annual Appeal
A project of HOME Line
HOME Line's Mission:
HOME Line provides free legal, organizing, educational and advocacy services so tenants throughout Minnesota can solve their own rental housing problems. HOME Line works to improve public and private policies relating to rental housing by involving affected tenants in the process.
Purpose:
HOME Line’s Tenant Hotline is a free service that provides renters throughout Minnesota with legal information regarding their rights as tenants. Lawyers and law students, both on staff and as volunteers, respond to renter inquiries and provide follow up support and form letters to tenants. In 2008, HOME Line served 11,063 callers on our Tenant Hotline, representing approximately 27,657 individual tenants, prevented 149 evictions, assisted 1,083 tenants with foreclosure issues, and helped tenants recover $72,503.74 in wrongfully withheld security deposits and rent abatements (money returned for substandard living conditions). HOME Line attorneys also educated over 50 high school classes, approximately 1,300 students, though our Renter Education Program in 2008 about the rights and responsibilities of tenants. Through this program, new renters get the information they need to be successful tenants and understand how to resolve issues with future landlords in a legal and collaborative manor.
