Higher Education Scholarship

In 1990, Sruthika and her family fled to India as Sri Lankan refugees, escaping the ravages of war between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan armed forces following the departure of the Indian Peace Keeping Forces. Her father, Mr. Elamurugan, like many other Sri Lankans fleeing the war, had to abandon everything and faced losses of great proportions due to this most brutal conflict. He lost 3 of his siblings to the conflict and his wife had to leave behind her family at a young age. After arriving in India, the couple set about rebuilding their torn lives with the help of a refugee organization called OfERR, gradually making a powerful transition from victims to agents of development and change.

Mr. Elamurugan has served as a longstanding, dedicated worker of OfERR. With meager earnings, he has made many sacrifices to raise two courageous, intelligent daughters. Sruthika, his second daughter, is determined to become a doctor, and is committed to serving her community in the future. Against all odds, she has completed her first year of medical school. As she begins her second year, however, she and her family are severely stressed about how to pay her medical college fees, amounting to $12,000 each year for the next 3 years.
