Help Wildlife Impacted by the BP Oil Spill

The catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the April 20, 2010 explosion of an offshore oil rig has put local economies, wildlife and the Gulf's delicate coastal ecosystem at risk. The National Wildlife Federation is on the front lines, assessing the damage and laying out a plan to protect wildlife as best we can. 1. The Gulf Coast oil spill is leaking 200,000 gallons of oil a day, and threatening more than 400 species of fish, birds and wildlife.
2. Marine mammals (like the bottlenose dolphin) can suffer chemical burns, skin irritation, ulcers, internal bleeding, and poisoning from oil-laced food.
3. Studies have found that sea turtle eggs contaminated by oil--even a small amount--may either fail to hatch or produce weakened, deformed hatchlings.
4. Gulls, pelicans and other birds that frequently land and float on the water can experience deadly hypothermia when oil destroys their insulation.
5. Because both shrimp and oysters readily consume environmental toxins, both are likely to pass on contaminants to their predators (including humans!).
