Organic Valley will match you dollar-for-dollar to a maximum of $25,000 if you'll help the Center for Food Safety fight GM Alfalfa.
Please join Organic Valley in supporting the Center for Food Safety's fight against Monsanto's Roundup Ready GM Alfalfa!
The Center for Food Safety (CFS) has a long history fighting to stop the proliferation of genetically modified crops. In 2010 they battled Monsanto and the USDA at the U.S. Supreme Court, and were victorious in maintaining the four year ban on the planting and sale of GM alfalfa. CFS also fought successfully to uphold a ban on GM sugar beets; in November, a federal judge ordered the removal and destruction of illegally planted GM beets.
Caving to heavy corporate influence, USDA announced in January that it would fully deregulate Monsanto's Roundup Ready GM alfalfa despite the acknowledged risks it poses to organic and conventional farmers.
Along with clover and a variety of grasses, alfalfa is a primary component of hay, a critical dietary staple for dairy cattle during times when access to pasture is interrupted due to winter or inclement weather. While there are methods organic farmers can use to help guard against GMO contamination, the impending unfettered addition of Monsanto's GM alfalfa to the environment will substantially increase the risk of contaminated crops and dramatically increase the amount of time and effort organic farmers must spend making sure their crops are safe and unpolluted. And beyond that, there is simply no reason for GM alfalfa to exist in the first place: 93% of all alfalfa grown in the US needs no pesticides at all, and we think Roundup Ready GM alfalfa is simply another example of Monsanto attempting to turn hay fields into another poison profit center.
So, once again, CFS is taking up the fight - suing USDA for this improper and illegal approval. But they need help - ours and yours. Organic Valley already donated $25,000 to the CFS's fight against GM alfalfa earlier this year, but we'll match your contribution dollar-for-dollar up to a maximum of $25,000 because we believe so strongly in the cause. If we're successful, together we'll have added $75,000 to CFS's cause.
