A project of PTA NEW JERSEY CONGRESS OF PARENTS & TEACHERS
We are raising funds to send the Electric Monkeys DI team from small but mighty Califon School to the Global Finals in Knoxville!
ELECTRIC MONKEYS OF CALIFON SCHOOL WIN AT STATEWIDE DESTINATION IMAGINATION, MOVE ONTO GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MAY Califon, NJ, March 28, 2013 – The mood was jubilant on Saturday, March 23rd at the Destination ImagiNation® State Championships in Robbinsville, NJ when a group of Califon School 4th and 5th grade students placed first in their challenge and division. They will now represent New Jersey as they move on to the Global Finals in Knoxville, TN at the end of May. Destination ImagiNation®, or “DI,” is the “world’s largest creative problem solving program for kids.” DI promotes teamwork, problem solving, innovation, creativity, and resourcefulness. Over 100,000 students from over 30 countries participate in DI competitions every year. Teams of up to 7 students must devise a unique solution to a challenge, which can have a focus that is theatrical, structural, improvisational, scientific, or technical. Teams must also demonstrate creative, quick-on-the-spot thinking skills to solve the Instant Challenge. The Electric Monkeys, comprised of first-time participants Hailey Ader, Benji Beard, Ben Hemberger, James Martin, Lindsay Murin, Mark Peter, and Emma Zande, under the guidance of team manager Melinda Hemberger, impressed the judges with their innovative problem solving and creative, whimsical approach to the In The Zone challenge, elementary level. Fifth grader Ben Hemberger stated, “I learned that teamwork helps you through life because it’s hard to do things by yourself. We all contributed to the team in our own way.” Not only did Califon School compete against more experienced teams, they also went up against much bigger districts with far greater resources. The team from the small 142-student district must now begin fundraising efforts to subsidize the costs of sending the team to Knoxville. Anyone interested in supporting these exceptional young students can send a contribution to Califon School PTA, marked “DI 2013” to Califon School, 6 School Street, Califon, NJ 07830.
