Bowie needs surgery to help with damage caused by previous significant fractures that went untreated. This fundraiser is to help with costs

Though small and very sweet-natured, Bowie has charisma and perseverance that live up to his rock-star name. At just a year and a half old, Bowie (a Skye terrier) is already a survivor.

Bowie came to live with our family about four weeks ago, after at least two prior homes in which he experienced abuse or neglect. Bowie initially had minimal use of his hind legs and tail due to significant fractures which had been left untreated.

The support of caring veterinary professionals since has improved Bowie’s mobility and comfort level. However, fully addressing Bowie’s injuries will take time. We are hopeful that an upcoming surgery will further assist Bowie in reaching the happy and active life that he deserves.

Even with injuries and past experiences that initially made Bowie fearful, he is now often affectionate, joyful and energetic. Bowie loves to shake his favorite toys and gives nudges for attention. He now moves with a hop and looks forward to recovering to the point that he can keep pace with his pal Marley (another beloved dog and Adopt-A-Pet alum). We are so grateful to the Adopt-A-Pet family, team of veterinary professionals and Bowie’s many fans who are making it possible for Bowie to show more of his star qualities after a painful start.

Bowie Update: Bowie spent his first week after surgery recovering in the veterinary clinic. He was closely monitored and has made good progress with the care and dedication of the veterinary staff. We are excited to have Bowie back in a foster home, where he continues to rest and heal. Bowie will be limited to brief leash activity for about four weeks and is receiving daily physical therapy. Bowie's hind legs are already moving more independently, with improvement to Bowie's "hop" even early on. Thank you to Bowie's many fans for making his recovery possible!

As you can tell, this was a serious and complex issue to try to resolve. Provided Bowie can avoid unanticipated complications (infection, loosening/migration of pins, etc), the prognosis appears good. Thanks all for the continued support. We have a great start for hitting the $2500 goal for Bowie’s fund drive.

Update: Bowie's surgical repair was more... Update: Bowie's surgical repair was more complicated than initially thought based on review of preoperative xrays -- the combined soft tissue and firm osseous/bony structures that were trying to heal the improperly aligned chronic fractures were difficult to realign. The veterinary surgical specialist started on Bowie's right femur and initially had concerns they would not be able to achieve proper alignment. It was mentioned that if not aligned on xrays amputation (or euthanasia) would need to be considered, or potentially allowing this leg to heal then coming back to perform the left knee in 2-3 weeks. Fortunately though, the post-operative x-rays showed acceptable alignment on his right hindlimb so proceeded to repair/realign his left hindlimb, which was much more straight-forward and ended up resulting in excellent alignment.
