For over four decades, Heart of the Earth has held true to its mission to honor and steward the cultural traditions and knowledge of Native American people by educating the young, respecting the elders, and providing a bridge of understanding to the broader society.
Heart of the Earth was born in a time of social turbulence and change. As the flagship organization of the American Indian Movement, it was charged by its founders with the stewardship of the social and cultural movement for Native Americans nationally as well as internationally. Equally important was the protection and revitalization of the culture, traditions, and languages of their ancestors, nearly extinguished by the federal and denominational boarding schools, and centuries of artificially imposed poverty
