  • Since 1993, HFA has provided home visiting services to new Alexandria parents.
  • HFA nurtures healthy family functioning as a way to prevent child abuse and neglect and promote healthy outcomes.
  • HFA is an evidence-based program with outstanding results. In FY2011, 243 families received services.
  • 93% of prenatal HFA enrollees delivered babies weighing at least 2500 grams.
  • 99% of HFA children had a primary health care provider.
  • 97% of HFA children were up-to-date on immunizations.
  • 99% of HFA mothers had an interval of at least 24 months between subsequent births.
  • 97% of HFA children met age appropriate developmental milestones.
  • 100% of HFA children with suspected developmental delays were referred to early intervention services.
  • 99% of HFA families had no substantiated cases of child abuse or neglect.
  • HFA’s dedicated staff makes it all happen, supported by an active advisory board of Alexandria community members.
  • Alexandria Mayor William Euille and members of the City Council are strong supporters of Healthy Families Alexandria.
  • HFA works in close partnership with many city and private agencies to provide a safety net for Alexandria families.
  • HFA thanks the City of Alexandria, the Commonwealth of Virginia, private foundations, and all donors for their support.

Healthy Families Alexandria, a program of Northern Virginia Family Service, provides voluntary home-visiting services to vulnerable first-time parents residing in the City of Alexandria. Established in 1993, the program is affiliated with Healthy Families America, an initiative of Prevent Child Abuse America, and is an active member of the 33-site Healthy Families Virginia network. HFA works to:

  • Develop positive parenting skills
  • Create a nurturing environment for the children
  • Complete regular developmental assesments
  • Adequately prepare children for Kindergarten through early literacy and socialization
