Headwaters Science Center

HSC was founded in 1993 as a hands-on Center in a rural setting to further the appreciation and understanding of science and technology.

We all have a responsibility in our modern society to place science in its rightful position as an indispensable part of everyday life. Only then can we deal successfully with the fundamental issues confronting society and planet earth, free us from ignorance and superstition and expand our ability to dream.

Science is an adventure story that captures the imagination of young and old that has been unfolding for thousands of years. Headwaters Science Center brings it all together - and it's fun!

A guest can interact with over 40 hands-on exhibits, go to a demonstration, watch a sky show in a portable planetarium, participate in a workshop or touch and hold a variety of live animals. A unique gift shop featuring science related toys, games and books is available for your shopping enjoyment.

Our Mission . . .

Headwaters Science Center's mission is to provide intellectual stimulation and enjoyment for all children and adults in its northern Minnesota service area with scientific and technological interactive displays, exhibits, and programs currently unavailable in the region. The Center will work with regional educational organizations and relevant community entities to assure that exhibits and activities will enhance and supplement educational programs.

The Center will strive to attain and maintain high standards for its demonstrations and programs, thereby providing educational experiences for those who reside in its service area as well as for seasonal visitors and tourists.
The Center will accomplish this mission by:

• Using displays to demonstrate scientific concepts;
• Providing space for traveling exhibits;
• Cooperatively establishing a science and technology resource center for K-12 teachers;
• Providing access to new computer and video technology;
• Providing space for student projects in science, technology, and mathematics;
• Providing classrooms for demonstrations, instruction, and appropriate educational meetings;
• Establishing a science and technology store.

The service area includes northern Minnesota communities from the Canadian and North Dakota borders through Itasca and Koochiching Counties on the east and into Norman, Becker, Wadena, Cass, Crow Wing and Aitken Counties on the south.

Under a parent organization called Opportunities In Science, HSC is supported by gifts, grants and admission fees. Please, we need your help and support.
