My goal is to raise at least $500 for School on Wheels & the homeless children we serve.
The first student I fell in love with at the School on Wheels Skid Row Learning Center was Bernice. It was one of the hottest days of summer, and we had been playing paddle ball all afternoon in the gated parking lot behind the building. Exhausted, 38 homeless children and I collapsed on the nacho cheese-stained rug to watch Jackson and Monique battle each other in Wii basketball. In spite of the cheering and excitement, 4-year-old Bernice scooted across the rug, snuggled into my lap, and closed her eyes. She fell fast asleep in my arms.
At School on Wheels, we believe that every child is precious, even if they do not have a home address. With the support of hundreds of volunteers throughout Southern California, School on Wheels provides K-12 homeless students with free one-on-one academic support, school supplies, and access to learning centers in two high-need areas of Los Angeles. As a non-profit community-based organization, we depend entirely on generous donations to keep these programs running.
Here is where we need your help. On October 27, we are having our 5th Annual School on Wheels 5K Fun Run. My goal is to raise at least $500 for our cause. All the funds we generate go directly back into the program, so by supporting me, you are supporting the hundreds of homeless children we serve every day.
