Gypsy Theatricals Inc dba Port City Playhouse

We are now in our 33rd season of bringing award-winning theatre to the City of Alexandria. Port City Playhouse (PCP) was founded in 1977 by an enthusiastic and talented band of performers and backers with the intention of being an innovative theatre group with an artistic vision different from other Alexandria community theatres. Port City's first show, Ninotchka, opened at the Puppet Theater on King Street. When the Puppet Theater’s lease ran out, Port City negotiated performing space at the Minnie Howard School. When the Minnie Howard years ended Port City moved to the scaled-down performance space at T.C. Williams Career Center auditorium, where small sets and small casts helped to redefine our vision as a theatre devoted to staging non-musicals with themes generally more "cutting edge," such as the award-winning show, "No Exit," "BecauseHeCan" and "Suddenly Last Summer."

Port City moved into its location at the Lee Center for the Performing Arts with the second show of the 2002-03 Season, The Waverly Gallery. Our third show of that season, Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, swept the metropolitan area’s community theater awards for which it was nominated, winning the Alliance of Community Theatres (ACT) award for outstanding production of a play, the coveted regional Ruby Griffith Award for overall excellence of production, and the Washington Area Theatre Community Honors (WATCH) award for outstanding play. In 2005, Port City’s historic play Hauptmann was again awarded the Ruby Griffith Award for overall excellence of production in competition with some 70 community theater organizations from Annapolis to Manassas. In 2006, we were awarded first runner-up for our production of the timely All My Sons and in 2009 we won a WATCH award for Best Props for the show, The Dresser.

Port City now performs at the The Lab at Convergence, located at 1819 N. Quaker Lane in Alexandria, VA 22302.
