In 1978, the United Way conducted research on child abuse and neglect in the Minneapolis area. The study found that overstressed parents had no place to bring their children when they needed a respite from child care while they resolved a family crisis. To fill this need, the Junior League of Minneapolis and partnering community groups established the Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, the first agency of its kind in Minnesota. We opened our doors in 1983, sheltering six children per day. Since 1999, the Crisis Nursery has been located in Golden Valley and currently has 18 beds in which to care for children. Our highest priority is to serve as many children and families as possible.

For nearly three decades, Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery has been a critical lifeline to families in crisis and children at risk of abuse and neglect. The Crisis Nursery’s programs—including a 24-hour crisis line, crisis counseling, community referrals, parent education classes, a family support group, a home visiting program, and overnight residential care for parents to place their children voluntarily-newborn through age six-for up to three nights while they address their crisis-act as models for similar agencies nationwide.

With the economy in flux and parents dealing with job loss, eviction and mental health issues, more children than ever are at risk of abuse and neglect. The Crisis Nursery has a 29-year history of leadership in this field and we pledge our continued commitment to serve families in crisis.
