Greater Life is a nonsectarian, faith-based non-profit that has been serving youth & family members of Newark, New Jersey’s economically challenged South Ward since 1986. At Greater Life, we provide crucial social services to over 1,500 youth from ages 7 to 19 each year, and their family members of all ages, targeting those children, teens, and young adults most in need of after-school social services: those suffering from poverty, with unstable family lives, and at risk of being influenced by gangs and the drug culture. In Newark, this is a group that is, tragically, only growing. From 2000 to 2004, school violence incidents in Newark involving weapons jumped a stunning 84%, and the amount of grandparents forced to raise their grandchildren leapt 73%. This is due in large part to Newark’s poverty epidemic: one in three Newark children grow up in poverty and that number is also growing.
Our expert staff of professionals, interns, and volunteers knows this Newark community well because we live here, and we have perfected a variety of programs designed to promote improved grades and behavior, physical health, social skills, moral & spiritual health, family and community involvement, and entrepreneurial and leadership skills. Over our decades of service, we have formed partnerships with dozens of community organizations, including the Essex County Youth Detention Facility, the Boy Scouts of America, the Advocates for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ), and the Newark Police Department, who established Greater Life as an official “Safe Haven” for children.
