Andrea and Greg are running the Surf City Marathon to help fund the fight against childhood cancer -- please join us in the fight!
We are running the Surf City Marathon to honor Christian Barker and all children afflicted with cancer. Please don't stop reading, because this is not just Christian's story; it belongs to all of us.
In May of 2006, our friends' eldest son, Christian Barker, was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia the day after his thirteenth birthday. During the ensuing 20 months, Christian endured over 16 months in the hospital, isolation, chemotherapy, total body radiation, 2 bone marrow transplants, 3 relapses of his cancer, several surgeries, daily nausea and vomiting, dozens of 'procedures' requiring sedation, hundreds of IV meds and transfusions, severe hemorrhaging, graft verses host disease and liver failure. After all that, Christian died at the age of 14-1/2 just before New Years 2008. Christian didn't die from his cancer, but from the toxic treatment. Christian gave everything that was asked of him and didn't complain. He was a gentle and brave soul. He and his family are our inspiration, and we are running the Surf City Marathon to honor them and all children afflicted with cancer.
It is important to realize that there have been almost no advances in the treatment of childhood cancer in over 20 years. The awareness and funding for childhood cancer is extremely poor, and we need to change that!
We are dedicated to help change the unacceptable state of the treatment of childhood cancer. Please join me in supporting the Gold Rush Cure Foundation (www.goldrushcure.org)! Christian's parents, Sandy and Gary, formed GRC four years ago. No one at GRC earns a salary, and all donations go to further GRC's mission of raising public awareness and to raising money for research to combat childhood cancer, both locally and nationally. All donations are 100% tax deductible since GRC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
We need your help! Please help our marathon count for something good!
