Who We Are// GlobeMed at UVA

Founded in 2011, GlobeMed at UVA is one of 50 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We are a group of undergraduate students deeply passionate about global health. The driving force of our organization is our partnerships with grassroots initiatives. We are partnered with the Build Your Future Today Center in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Together, we work to fight child malnutrition and low literacy levels in the Bos Em, Kok Yieng, and Arak Svay villages.

Our Partner// Build Your Future Today in Siem Reap, Cambodia

BFT is an independent, non-profit organization highly committed to providing the opportunity for people, especially children who have been living through hardship and poverty, to adopt effective solutions to improve their lives. This is built upon two principles. First, that “Knowledge is Hope”, and second “Peace is Development”. Since April 2006, BFT has active programs in providing skill training, supporting orphans and indigent children, community peace building, and micro financing to support impoverished family business development.

Our Project// $3,500 for the Safe Child and Mother Care Project

This year, GlobeMed at UVA is aiming to fundraise $3,500 for the Safe Child and Mother Care project in the villages of Bos Em, Koy Yieng, and Arak Svay outside Siem Reap. The project’s goals are as following:

I) Eliminate malnutrition in children under 5 years ($1,920). The funds will go towards providing nutritious food supplies for children under 5, training sessions for community cooks, additional hygiene supplies, and a water filter-tank system for the village.

II) Reduce the rate of child and mother mortality ($400). The funds will go towards providing primary awareness through educational classes for pregnant women and new mothers. The classes will involve the importance of pre-natal healthcare, the important groups of food, breast feeding, sexual health, diarrhea, dengue fever, malaria, and general hygiene sanitation.

III) Reduce the rate of children repeating the first class ($200). The funds will go towards providing training to early education center community volunteers and the printing and publishing of necessary materials.
