GlobeMed at Bucknell partners with KIHEFO Nutrition Rehabilitation Center in Kabale, Uganda to improve the health of malnourished children.

Who We Are // GlobeMed at Bucknell

GlobeMed at Bucknell is one of 46 GlobeMed chapters working to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world. We partner with the Nutrition Rehabilitation Center of KIHEFO (Kigezi Healthcare Foundation), which is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization working in the Kabale District of southwestern Uganda.

Our Partner // KIHEFO Nutrition Rehabilitation Center in Kabale, Uganda

KIHEFO works in the region surrounding Kabale, Uganda to lower malnutrition rates, especially among children who are HIV positive. Doctors, volunteers and other workers take in children who are identified as malnourished through different weight tests and interviews of their parents. The children are taken in for nutrition treatment and are kept under the center's watch for months even after they complete their treatment. During the child's treatment, the family is educated on proper nutrition and how to keep their child healthy after being sent back to their homes. In the areas surrounding Kabale, malnourishment rates are found to be extremely high, around 83%. KIHEFO is working to lower this number and educate the community about the importance of nutritional health.

Our Project // $3000 to supply malnourished pediatric patients and their families with treatment, care, and counseling

Our main project is assisting with nutrition treatment funding; this includes milk and protein packets. In addition, this funding will go towards measurement tools which will allow KIHEFO's patients to be accurately assessed, as well as fund the provision of resources for families to come to the center and be educated in the areas of nutrition, development and income generation to properly care for their children.
