Our Partner// CEMOPLAF Cajabamba in Cajabamba, Ecuador
CEMOPLAF, whose acronym translates into Medical Center Orientation and Family Planning, is an organization based in Cajabamba, Ecuador that focuses on sexual and reproductive health issues. Founded in 1974, it provides a wide array of sexual health services, including but not limited to: medical clinics, community distribution posts, family planning services, and general and pediatric consultations. It is partnered with GlobeMed at Indiana University and is currently working with them on a variety of projects related to fertility awareness, sexuality education, and HIV prevention in 21 communities.
Project 1 // $1,500 to create a theatrical education program for rural communities in Ecuador
This year, the IU chapter is aiming to raise $1,500 to support CEMOPLAF-Cajabamba's sexual and reproductive health education programs. Our funds will support hiring a theatrical director and playwright, who will engage CEMOPLAF's youth volunteers in productions geared towards educating youth in rural communities. The funds will also go towards supplies for these productions, as well as transportation costs to help the volunteers reach remote and impoverished areas of the mountainous area of Ecuador.
Project 2 // $2250 to facilitate weaving and needlework classes for adolescent girls and young women in Chimborazo
For Ecuadorean women, needlework has traditionally been a method of attaining self-sufficiency through artisan work, and an occasion for women to come together and discuss social and political issues. It has also been a form of activism, bringing attention to social oppression and inequality, and allowing marginalized voices to be heard. CEMOPLAF plans to use needlework as a way of bringing Ecuadorean women together, as well as a forum for discussing issues of sexual and reproductive health, family planning, and gender inequality in their communities. IU is raising funds to support our partner CEMOPLAF in that effort.
